As in my previous post, I just acquired series II A that I haven’t give a name yet. Thinking that the engine was rebuilt by “professional” accessories also installed so I can just enjoy the ride yes..? wrong… after a week using the landy here are things need to be fixed..
Despite the power steering installed the steering is quite heavy and noisy… the belt is loose… Fixed..!
Fixed the power steering but still very noisy… alternator belt is loose.. Fixed
The Landy can not stable on low RPM despite new carburetor ( Zenith Copy) – Replaced with other carburetor … Fixed..!
The exhaust is suddenly smoking like cigarette junkies… as you can see below
The steering is wandering around partly fixed by wheel alignment…
The fuel tank is leaking – not fixed
NO OIL in Differential and axle..!! Fixed
Loose bolt in front axle – king pen Fixed
The rear axle may be faulty… not fixed..
God knows what else…
So moral of the story is… when you buy new shiny landy (or everything else) carefully check everything do not take it for granted even if you’re told that it was built by a Pro.
But….. Not that I am complaining because I know rebuilding the series 2A which is much older than me to the current state is not easy….. here is the video what you expect if you want to totally rebuild series 2 A… compare to the previous owner for all the work hard and time and money, the above are nothing…
Just acquired a new land rover series… year make is 1965 or land rover series IIA as we call it. You may ask why do I need another one… Actually I do not need another one… I have few excuses but I think the most important thing is I fall in love with this particular land rover and this is why….
it just freshly repainted… and it is very good paint… by looking at it you know that it uses an expensive paint… just see the picture below…
The tire is 32 size with 15 inch rim, new…! wheel arch flare / over fender is actually not bad, hand made from aluminum. This car came to Indonesia as completely built up, and that’s quite rare, usually Landrover shipped it to Indonesia as Completely Knock down, and the hard top is made in Indonesia… but not this one
and here is the interior:
Paint job is not good as exterior, there are few missing switches… but air condition is already installed, all handle are functional…
Leather seats..!! when the last time you find land rover series in leather seats.. :) Door trim is copying Defender
Back seats is individual seats… this even rarer in Indonesia, again its covered in leather… very luxurious… :), look at the top trim as well, that’s a custom made from fiber glass and then wrapped in synthetic leather…
The engine has been rebuilt.. lost’s of new parts… if you have keen eyes you know something that’s not belong to series IIA here… fortunately its better… :). and most importantly the price for this car can be considered as very cheap… the previous owner sells at a lost
Other than the above, my excuse buying this car is: I need short chassis… it is very difficult to maneuver the long chassis in Jakarta… so yea.. why not to have another one.. :). Having said that, I have to sell my other Landy to finance this… :)
Few days ago I have little incidence that make me quite confuse… The Dolly Parton suddenly (name of the landy) stopped, no sign, no clue no warning, no coughing, no nothing… it just stop dead, it happened just after I refill the fuel… So there is no way it lack of fuel.
So what to do..? having landy for few years you kind of know what is potentially went wrong.. so I did few several tests… hope that it will help you in the future if you have the same case…
Something that we need to understand is… rarely landy stop dead because of the engine.. most of the times it caused by two things:
So I run few test as below (click for a bigger picture):
Now from this test I know that there is three possibilities:
The coil is dead
the distributor is dead / faulty
and no current from key starter
But which one is it..? the easiest is to check “whether there is current from the key starter…” by jump starting the coil like the following…:
The engine can not be started… so I still left with three possible problems… but I know for sure that either the coil and or distributor is faulty… so next step is to open the distributor cap… mine is using electronic distributor and …
I thought that this is the end of story, so I disconnect the cable jumper… like so..
Alas.. after disconnected, the engine is dead again.. means that there is other potential problem causing the engine dead.
First thing first need to check the fuse by using test light.. and sure enough I found out that the second fuse from the top is dead… and I have to improvise the fuse using cable strand like the following…
And I pray that no other problem… turning the key starter… and voila… I hear the engine purring happily… :), thats it folks… Happy landying… I hope never happened to you but if your landy start playing tricks.. you know what to do
When you know something is not right and it only for temporary solution, we all want to make it right and solve it… The braking system for Dolly has been OK after using Toyota seals as you can read it here : http://vidinur.com/2013/07/31/when-girling-does-not-fit-the-girlings/ but in the back of my mind… I always think what if it suddenly fail…
So finally I bought new set of Girling Wheel master cylinder… I got the genuine part cost around US$ 35 each… expensive I know but it is actually hard to get, when some one offer me the original part, I quickly take that offer. Here is the new Girling Brake wheel master cylinder….. Funny thing is, although it says Girling in the item… the packaging is Unipart… I guess Unipart is making the item for Girling or Vice versa… or someone messed up with the packaging..
Because this is an NOS (new but OLD STOCK), I have to dismantle it first, make sure that nothing seized and rusted inside… after everything satisfactory. Installing is quite straight forward so no need to post picture here, you need to take off the tire and drum… and then bleed the system, you are good to go…
The brake is now good, worries are gone… That’s it for now… Happy landying.. :)
