Sering kita mendengar kata Niche terutama dalam pemasaran yg biasanya di artikan sebagai “segmented”, hal tersebut tidaklah salah tetapi sebetulnya kata niche mungkin lebih luas dari yang biasa kita bayangkan.
Kata Niche sendiri berasal dari bahasa perancis di abad pertengahan “Nicher” yang berarti “bersarang” (to nest), dipopulerkan peneliti2 ekologi salah satunya adalah Charles Sutherland Elton yg pada tahun 1927 memberikan penggunaan konsep niche. dia berkata:
[W]hen an ecologist says ‘there goes a badger,’ he should include in his thoughts some definite idea of the animal’s place in the community to which it belongs, just as if he had said, ‘there goes the vicar.
